Fur,
Feathers, and Fossils: The Art of Mark A. Klingler will
be showing in the Gallery through June 2008.
Mark
Anton Klingler is an award-winning scientific illustrator
at Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA.
He
began his
career in scientific illustration as a work-study while
earning his degree in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon
University.
Mark's
unique artistic style combines the informal feeling of
a field sketch with the exacting detail of a technical
drawing. His drawings
and watercolor paintings of everything from extinct primates
and dinosaurs to all manner of modern-day creatures
and plants have been published by National Geographic,
Discovery, Nature, Scientific
American, Journal of Human Evolution, The
Johns Hopkins University Press, University of California
Press - Berkeley, and Web sites such as CNN.com, BBC.com,
and Reuters.com. Venues for Mark’s shows, lectures,
and workshops include Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Mellon
University, National Audubon Society, and the New York State
Museum. Mark has presented workshops and shows on illustration
at both the local and national level.
Klingler’s
dedication to scientific illustration is rooted in a commitment
to conservation of natural resources
and preservation of wildlife. This personal level of interest
has contributed to his success with conservation projects
for state wildlife agencies, including the Pennsylvania Wild
Resource Agency’s Butterflies & Skippers of
Pennsylvania conservation
poster, a Native Species Conservation Stamp commissioned
by the Fish and Game Commission of California, and 2007's Field
Guide to the Natural World of New York City commissioned
by the Parks Department of New York City (author Leslie
Day, foreword NYC Mayor Michael
Bloomberg).
Fur,
Feathers & Fossils
gives visitors a look into the process of scientific
reconstruction and wildlife art. Images of Klingler's work
are accompanied by in-depth descriptions of the process,
sources,
and applications
of the various types of illustration that are on display.
The exhibit also includes a kiosk presenting a video interview
with the artist and a slideshow of his illustration process.
